Why Social Software?

  • What does "Shift Happens" mean to you? The word "shift" implies a gradual change or sliding. When I think of this word in terms of technology, it almost seems like an understatement. After watching the video, I realized major changes are happening with technology, and it is my job to learn about and keep up with them. I really was surprised about the statistics regarding the population of China and about the rate at which technology is expanding.
  • How has "Shift" happened your classroom? When I started teaching, I did not even have a computer in my classroom, and I kept my grades in a grade book--I had to use white out when I wanted to change anything!
  • If "Shift" hasn't happened in your classroom, what are some ways that it should? This class has introduced me to several tools such as wikis and google docs that I could use in the classroom.
  • How do your students view shift? For most teenagers, what adults call "shift" is the norm. They, in many instances, know more about and use technology more than their parents and teachers do.

Wikis

  • What are they? Wikis are websites that are collaborative---students, teachers, or anyone with access can edit them.
  • How can you use them with your students? One use for a wiki would be to make it a class website. It could contain items like a disclosure, calendar, and assignments. It would be very useful for including parents as participants in the classroom since they could view the wiki anytime to see what was taking place in class. Parents could also use it to comment and to ask questions about assignments, class procedures, etc.
  • You've created a wiki? Where can we find it? Here it is!

Google Tools

  • What are they? Google tools include things like Google Docs and Google Reader.
  • How can you use them with your students? Google Docs would be very useful for creating a classroom or school newspaper. All of the articles could be stored in one place and could be edited by anyone with internet access. Google Reader seems like it would be very useful for doing things like research projects as well as for teaching advanced reading/research skills such as skimming.
